As we delve into this narrative that bridges the gap between oral tradition and the written word, we discover a multi-layered story and profound insights into the connections between the self, society, and the world.

In our exploration, we'll also examine an essay by Marina Morrow, who suggests a change in terminology – from "mental illness" to "mental distress" – to reshape our perspectives on what we commonly label as 'madness.'

Let's embark on this exploration as we navigate these thought-provoking themes and uncover the profound implications they hold for our understanding of mental health and the collective responsibility of society.

The novel challenges conventional Western thinking by seamlessly weaving Native American oral tradition into the written word, traversing multiple timelines. Silko's work provokes profound questions about the boundaries between the self and the environment while emphasizing the interconnectedness of all life forms. These themes resonate with modern discussions about the environment's impact on mental health, as illustrated in a LA Times article documenting a California tribe's efforts to combat a suicide epidemic.

What If We Call It “Mental Distress” instead of “Mental Illness”

As we delve deeper into the themes of interconnectedness and mental health, we turn to Marina Morrow's essay, "Recovery: Progressive Paradigm or Neoliberal Smokescreen." In Morrow's thought-provoking work, she examines the lives of individuals diagnosed with mental distress, shedding light on the discrimination they often face. Morrow's perspective challenges conventional terminology, opting for "mental distress" over "mental illness." This linguistic shift invites us to explore how our environment can contribute to emotional struggles, aligning with the themes we encounter in Ceremony.

In her essay, Marina Morrow, an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Director of the Center for the Study of Gender, Social Inequities, and Mental Health at SFU, observes that "people diagnosed with mental illness lead lives marked by discrimination." While this observation may not be a revelation, Morrow takes it further by suggesting that casually labeling this phenomenon as "mental illness" perpetuates stigma. Instead, she opts for the term "mental distress."

While this linguistic change alone cannot resolve all the complex issues related to mental health, it does transform our perspective on "madness." "Mental distress" implies the influence of external factors, shifting the focus and blame away from the individual and challenging the norms of society. It suggests that the environment may bear some responsibility, at least in part, for mental distress, which, in turn, means the environment can play a role in recovery.

As Silko reminds us, "His sickness was only part of something larger, and his cure would be found only in something great and inclusive of everything" (p.116). This implies that society must take responsibility for individuals in distress because what was formerly referred to as "mental illness" is merely a symptom of more extensive societal issues.

Everyone is a Patient. Everyone is a Doctor

If we do not treat a person’s suffering as an illness, we might be able to see that not only a doctor can help

There may be room for disagreement regarding the interconnected nature of mental distress. The Cartesian concept of the modern individual appears to challenge my standpoint, as it distinguishes the Cartesian Other from the Cartesian Self. René Descartes, famous for his declaration "I think, therefore I am," asserts that there exists "an intrinsic divide within human consciousness, preventing any bridging of the gap between one's own consciousness and that of another."

However, accepting Descartes' perspective amounts to rejecting the existence of empathy, care, and love. Furthermore, his argument, which denies the possibility of comprehending anything beyond the self, inadvertently suggests the potential for complete self-knowledge, a notion effectively debunked by psychoanalytic theories.

Despite psychiatry's insistence that individuals "would never get well as long as he [or she] use[s] words like ‘we’ and ‘us’" (Silko p.116), my exploration of recovery in Ceremony yielded different insights: "The people must do it. You must do it" (p.115); "And there would be no peace, and the people would have no rest until the entanglement had been unwound to the source" (p.64).

In Conclusion

In this exploration of mental distress and its portrayal in Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony, we've delved into the profound connections between individual experience, societal responsibility, and the environment. The contrast between the Western notion of the isolated self and the Indigenous perspective of interconnectedness challenges us to reconsider the language we use to describe mental struggles.

By adopting terms like "mental distress" instead of "mental illness," we shift the focus from the individual to society and the environment, opening doors to more compassionate approaches. Silko's narrative, while firmly rooted in Native American storytelling traditions, echoes universal truths about our collective responsibility to heal and create environments where mental wellness can thrive.

As we continue these conversations, let us recognize that every word we choose and every story we share can shape a more inclusive and empathetic future for mental health.

This disruption can hurt mental health, including increased stress, decreased focus, and mood disturbances.

Comparison and Envy: Social media feeds are often filled with carefully curated and filtered posts highlighting the best aspects of people's lives. Constant exposure to these seemingly perfect images can trigger feelings of inadequacy, envy, and self-comparison. This can contribute to negative self-perception, lowered self-esteem, and decreased overall life satisfaction.

Filters and Body Image: Social media platforms offer various filters and editing tools that can alter one's appearance. This can lead to body dysmorphic disorders as individuals strive for an unrealistic and unattainable standard of beauty. It can also contribute to the development of eating disorders and a distorted perception of self-image.

Time Drain and Reduced Productivity: Social media can be highly addictive and time-consuming. Scrolling through endless feeds, engaging in online discussions, and consuming an overwhelming amount of content can take away valuable time and energy. This can lead to decreased productivity, missed opportunities for real-life experiences, and a sense of dissatisfaction.

Emotional Impact: Social media platforms are designed to capture attention and generate engagement. As a result, clickable content often includes shocking or provocative elements that stimulate strong emotional responses. Constant exposure to such content can activate the fight or flight response, increasing stress levels and impacting emotional well-being.

Posture, Neck, and Shoulder Pain: Excessive phone usage can contribute to poor posture, leading to neck and shoulder pain. The prolonged forward head position and hunching over devices can strain the neck and shoulder muscles, potentially causing discomfort and chronic pain.

Headaches: Frequent and prolonged phone usage, coupled with poor posture and eye strain, can trigger tension headaches or migraines. The never-ending feed of captivating content, the allure of likes and comments, and the fear of missing out (FOMO) create a cycle of compulsive scrolling and checking. With each notification, our brains receive a hit of dopamine, the pleasure neurotransmitter, reinforcing the urge to return for more. The anonymity and distance offered by social media can embolden some users to engage in harmful behaviors that can severely affect the victim's mental health. Get set to unlock a brighter, happier digital you!

Set Time Limits: Set boundaries and limit the amount of time you spend on social media. Determine specific time blocks or daily limits to prevent excessive usage. Utilize tools such as app timers or productivity apps to track and manage your social media time effectively.

Embrace "Cell-Phone Jail": Designate specific times when you will disconnect from your phone during the day. For example, create a box or shelf where you place your cell phone after a certain hour (preferably after 6 PM) until the following morning (around 7 AM). This practice allows you to spend quality time with your family or roommates, fostering genuine connections and reducing digital distractions. It also allows our bodies to rest in the evenings and prepare for nighttime sleep.

Disconnect During Meals: Make a conscious effort to disconnect from social media during meal times. Engaging with our phones while eating can disrupt digestion and reduce the enjoyment of meals. By disconnecting from screens, we can focus on savoring our food, cultivating a mindful eating practice, and allowing our bodies to digest food more effectively. Creating a phone-free zone during meals provides an opportunity to relax, connect with family or friends, and fully appreciate the nourishment and pleasure of dining without distractions.

Practice Mindful Consumption and Curate Your Feed: Be conscious of the content you consume on social media. Regularly review and adjust the list of accounts you follow on social media. Unfollow or mute accounts that contribute to stress, comparison, or negative emotions. Instead, seek out accounts that inspire, educate, and promote positivity in areas such as mental health, self-care, personal growth, and hobbies.

Disable Notifications: Reduce interruptions and the constant need to check your phone by disabling notifications from social media apps. This helps break the cycle of instant gratification and reduces the impact of the dopamine effect triggered by new notifications. By regaining control over notifications, you can focus on more meaningful activities and reduce the urge to constantly check your social media accounts.

Cultivate a Digital Detox Routine: Incorporate regular periods of digital detox into your routine. Designate specific days, weekends, or holidays as screen-free times to disconnect from social media and focus on meaningful offline activities. Use this time to engage in hobbies, spend quality time with loved ones, or simply relax and recharge.

Engage in Active Participation: Instead of passively scrolling through social media feeds, actively engage with content and participate in meaningful discussions. Share your thoughts, experiences, and support others in a positive and constructive manner. Engaging actively can help foster genuine connections and create a more fulfilling social media experience.

Embrace Body Positivity: Resist using filters and appreciate your authentic self. Accept and celebrate your unique features, focusing on self-love and body positivity. Challenge societal beauty standards and embrace the diversity of body shapes, sizes, and appearances.

Practice Self-Care Rituals: Incorporate self-care practices into your daily routine to nurture your mental and emotional well-being. Prioritize activities such as meditation, journaling, exercise, or spending time in nature. By dedicating time to self-care, you can build resilience, reduce stress, enhance your overall happiness, and avoid excessive social media consumption.

Set Intentional Time Blocks: Rather than constantly checking social media throughout the day, establish specific time blocks for social media usage. Allocate a limited amount of time dedicated solely to engaging with social media content, and be mindful of not exceeding that allotted time. This helps prevent mindless scrolling and promotes a healthier balance between online and offline activities.

Rethink Metrics: Define your goals and values on social media. Instead of solely focusing on likes and follower counts, shift your attention to meaningful engagement, connections, and personal growth. Measure success based on the value you provide, the connections you make, and the positive impact you have on others. This perspective helps you build a healthier relationship with social media and reduces the potential for comparison and negative self-perception.

Celebrate Your Moments: Use social media as a tool to revisit your own joyful memories. Scroll through your own photos and videos, reliving happy moments, achievements, and experiences. By sharing and celebrating your own journey, you can activate the pleasure response in your brain and reinforce positive emotions, self-appreciation, and gratitude.

In conclusion

In the ever-evolving digital landscape, social media holds a prominent place in our lives, influencing our mental well-being in multifaceted ways. The hope is that embracing this cutting-edge technology will allow me to stay ahead of the curve in the world of content creation, honing my writing and content generation skills while tapping into its promising potential. With automation looming on the horizon, mastering the use of generative AI seems crucial to secure a position in the ever-evolving landscape of content creation.

While generative AI has proven extremely useful and fun to collaborate with, I've also encountered its inadequacies and occasional hallucinations firsthand.

Recently, during my AI-assisted content creation journey, I came across a captivating quote attributed to Pablo Neruda: "Poetry is like a mirror that reveals the invisible, every poem is a window to the soul." However, my attempts to authenticate this quote proved fruitless, casting doubt on the accuracy of AI-generated content.

In this blog post, I look into the limitations and challenges of generative AI, shedding light on its occasional inaccuracies and highlighting the best practices. Join me as we navigate the uncharted waters of generative AI, aiming to harness its potential while ensuring responsible and accurate content creation.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized content creation, enabling the automated generation of text, images, and even videos. From enhancing productivity to augmenting creativity, it offers immense potential for various industries. However, like any emerging technology, generative AI also has its shortcomings and drawbacks that need to be acknowledged and addressed. Below, I will explore the limitations of generative AI, including hallucinations and other challenges, and provide best practices for incorporating it into your content strategy.

1. Hallucinations and Inaccuracies

One of the major concerns with generative AI is its tendency to produce content that lacks accuracy or may include fictional information. The models are trained on vast amounts of data, which can lead to the generation of plausible but false information. Users must exercise caution while relying solely on generative AI outputs, especially in fields where accuracy and factual correctness are crucial, such as journalism, scientific research, or legal documentation.

Best Practice: Implement rigorous fact-checking processes to verify the generated content and ensure its accuracy before publishing. Combining generative AI with human oversight can significantly mitigate the risk of spreading misinformation.

2. Lack of Contextual Understanding

Generative AI models often struggle with contextual understanding, resulting in outputs that may seem coherent but lack deeper meaning. The models primarily learn patterns and statistics from the training data, which can limit their ability to grasp complex nuances and subtleties.

Best Practice: Provide clear and specific instructions or prompts to guide the generative AI models. By setting well-defined contexts and constraints, content creators can achieve more targeted and relevant outputs.

3. Bias Amplification

Generative AI models are trained on existing datasets, which inherently contain biases present in the data. If not addressed, these biases can be amplified in the generated content, potentially perpetuating stereotypes or discriminatory narratives.

Best Practice: Conduct regular audits and evaluations of the training data to identify and mitigate bias. Employ diverse datasets and consider incorporating ethical guidelines to ensure fair and inclusive content generation.

4. Lack of Creativity and Originality

While generative AI excels at replicating existing patterns and styles, it can struggle to produce truly original and creative content. AI-generated outputs may often lack the innovation, emotional depth, and unique perspectives that human creators bring to their work.

Best Practice: Utilize generative AI as a tool to augment human creativity rather than replace it. Collaborate with AI systems to enhance productivity, generate ideas, or assist in the creative process, but always preserve the human touch in content creation.

5. Intellectual Property Concerns

Generative AI models can inadvertently generate content that infringes upon intellectual property rights. The models might unknowingly reproduce copyrighted material or closely resemble the work of others, leading to legal complications.

Best Practice: Familiarize yourself with copyright laws and fair use guidelines. Ensure that the generative AI system is not trained on copyrighted material without proper authorization. Implement checks and balances to review and validate the generated content for potential infringement.

In conclusion

Generative AI has immense potential for content creation, but it also comes with its fair share of limitations and challenges. By acknowledging shortcomings such as hallucinations, lack of contextual understanding, bias amplification, lack of creativity, and intellectual property concerns, content creators can make informed decisions when incorporating generative AI into their strategies. By embracing best practices like fact-checking, contextual guidance, bias mitigation, human collaboration, and adhering to copyright regulations, we can harness the power of generative AI responsibly and ethically, unlocking new possibilities in content creation while upholding quality and integrity.

6 Tips for Writing Compelling Health and Wellness Articles for Your Blog

Unlock the power of health and wellness content creation. Engage readers by offering unique insights or perspectives that inspire them to make positive life changes.

4. Use clear headings, subheadings, and bullet points to break down information and enhance readability. Incorporate storytelling elements, personal experiences, or case studies to make the content relatable and engaging. Include relevant images or visual aids to complement the text.

5. However, with fierce competition in the app market, it's crucial for app creators and developers to implement effective digital marketing strategies to reach their target audience and drive app downloads. In this article, we will explore five powerful techniques specifically tailored for health and wellness apps.

1. Leverage Health and Wellness Digital Marketing

To create a strong online presence, it's essential to embrace health and wellness digital marketing strategies. Start by identifying your target audience and their specific needs. Develop a comprehensive marketing plan that includes search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing, and email marketing. By understanding your audience's preferences and engaging with them through targeted content, you can increase brand visibility and attract more users to your app.

2. Harness Healthcare Marketing Strategies

Collaborating with healthcare providers and professionals can be a game-changer for your app marketing efforts. Partner with wellness services providers, private practices, or community health centers to promote your app. This collaboration not only enhances your credibility but also helps you tap into their existing patient or client base. Consider offering incentives, such as exclusive discounts or free trials, to encourage healthcare providers to recommend your app to their audience.

3. Optimize App Store Presence

App store optimization (ASO) is crucial for app marketing success. Optimize your app's title, description, and keywords with relevant terms like "wellness," "health," and other niche-specific keywords. Utilize captivating screenshots and compelling app descriptions to grab users' attention and highlight the unique features and benefits of your app. Regularly update your app's content, addressing user feedback and incorporating the latest trends to maintain a competitive edge.

4. Create Engaging and SEO-Friendly Content

Content creation plays a vital role in driving organic traffic to your app. Develop a blog or resource section on your website that focuses on health and wellness topics. Write engaging health-related articles, wellness blog posts, and content specifically addressing mental health. Incorporate SEO techniques, such as keyword research and optimization, to ensure your content ranks higher in search engine results. Providing valuable information through your content establishes your app's authority in the industry and attracts a dedicated user base.

5. Embrace Influencer Marketing

Influencer marketing is a powerful tool for promoting health and wellness apps. Identify influential individuals in the health and wellness niche, such as fitness experts, nutritionists, or mental health advocates, who align with your app's values and target audience. Collaborate with these influencers to create sponsored content, reviews, or social media campaigns. Their endorsement can significantly boost your app's visibility, credibility, and user acquisition.

In the competitive landscape of health and wellness apps, implementing effective digital marketing techniques is essential to stand out and attract your target audience. By leveraging health and wellness digital marketing strategies, harnessing healthcare partnerships, optimizing your app store presence, creating engaging content, and embracing influencer marketing, you can increase brand awareness, drive app downloads, and ultimately, help users improve their well-being through your app. Stay proactive, monitor analytics, and adapt your marketing strategies to stay ahead of the curve in this rapidly evolving industry.

Remember, each technique should be customized to suit your app's unique features, target audience, and marketing goals. By employing a well-rounded digital marketing approach, your health and wellness app can thrive in the digital realm and make a positive impact on users' lives.

Promiscuity as a Symptom: Unveiling Gender Bias in Mental Health

The pathologization of female sexuality reflects societal biases and oppressive norms, impacting women's mental health. Once subjected to pseudo-doctors who dictated their "duties as a woman" or proposed extreme treatments like castration to cure hysteria (p.21), women endured moralizing nonsense from those who knew nothing about their experiences. That was called medicine. Echo of this barbarian approach, as ridiculous as it seems, is still very present in our culture. Yes, now you can be seen by a female professional, and views on sexuality are not that Victorian anymore, yet, in our culture, the main symptom of female madness is still promiscuity.

The film "Girl, Interrupted" offers a poignant moment when Susan questions the arbitrary standards placed on women's sexual behavior, highlighting the gendered nature of this ambiguous label, "Susanna: I mean, what kind of sex isn’t casual? Janet: They mean promiscuous."

What is promiscuity, anyway?

Later in the movie, Susan has an argument with her doctor, asking, “How many guys do I have to sleep with to be considered promiscuous, text-book promiscuous? 10? 8? 5? And how many girls a guy my age would have to sleep with to be considered promiscuous? 10? 20? 109?” She speaks out the obvious truth that it is always somehow the image of a woman that gets associated with this ambivalent “promiscuous.” And how is it that in order to translate the vague madness into a concrete mental illness, such an arbitrary concept is chosen to act as a symptom? And it is not only in Girl, Interrupted. The recent Silver Linings Playbook and Wild main characters also manifest their madness through excessive sexual relationships.

These are just a few examples of popular culture tying promiscuity to madness and pathologizing female sexual desire

How did we get here?

Female sexuality was so much of an issue it had to be pathologized. In Other Women, Anita Levy quotes Showalter, “Even when both men and women had similar symptoms of mental disorder, […] psychiatry differentiated between an English malady, associated with the intellectual and economic pressures on highly civilized men, and female malady, associated with the sexuality and essential nature of women” (p.104). Thus, we see how the concept of madness—which according to Levy had been feminized in the middle of the nineteenth century: “the madman had become the madwoman” (p.103)—is sprouting out of problematic female sexuality. It’s problematic because “civilized world” does not want it to exist. It should be suppressed and controlled; if it somehow still breaks free, it should necessarily be interpreted as a symptom. Because once an experience is translated into a symptom, a patient can be diagnosed and “helped.” As Denise Russel writes in Women, Madness and Medicine, “When female sexuality [gets] out of line, psychiatry [can] be brought in as a corrective force” (p.13).

The pathologization of female sexuality and the association of promiscuity with madness reveal the deeply entrenched societal biases and oppressive norms that continue to impact women. Throughout history, women have been subjected to moralizing judgments and attempts to control their sexuality, perpetuated under the guise of medicine and psychiatry. The arbitrary labeling of promiscuity as a symptom of madness reflects a troubling double standard, as men are often exempt from the same scrutiny. This distorted view of female sexuality persists, despite progress in gender equality and changing attitudes towards sexuality. To move forward, we must challenge and dismantle these harmful stereotypes, promoting a society that embraces sexual autonomy, equality, and respects the diverse experiences of individuals. Only by doing so can we create a truly inclusive and empowering environment for all.

Mood-of-the-post song is from the movie Girl, Interrupted – one of my favorite songs and one of my favorite movies

Therapeutic Power of Writing Poetry: 5 Benefits for Your Mental Health

The therapeutic benefits of poetry have been widely documented, with multiple studies recognizing poetry as an effective tool for mental health and emotional well-being. But poetry isn't just an outlet—it can also provide comfort and healing. The therapeutic benefits of poetry have been widely documented, with multiple studies recognizing poetry as an effective tool for mental health and emotional well-being.

Here are five benefits of writing poetry for your mental health.

1. Self-expression

Poetry allows people to communicate their innermost thoughts and feelings without worrying about how another person might interpret or judge them. As an act of self-care, writing poetry is healing because it can help us release stored-up emotions and reconnect with ourselves. The poet is free to explore and express their feelings, no matter how dark or negative, and poetry becomes a powerful outlet for self-expression. Poetry can offer an emotional outlet and help us put words to experiences, memories, and emotions that may be too difficult or uncomfortable to communicate in other formats.

2. Self-compassion

Poetry allows us to explore complex or charged topics safely and creatively. The process of writing a poem can provide clarity and courage to take on personal changes and difficult conversations. In sharing our poetry, whether to ourselves or with others, we can find greater understanding, acceptance, and compassion for the complexity of our lives. Thus, poetry can offer support in the most challenging situations.

3. Emotional intelligence

Another reason poetry is so valuable is that it doesn't just provide the outlet for self-expression--it supplies the poet with the poetic tools to shape the emotions into words and arrange those words to express a feeling, experience, or idea. It's like vehicles, traffic flow, and roads—imagine that words are vehicles, structure and flow are the roads, and literary devices are the traffic.

Dealing with raw emotions can be challenging. Writing poetry can help transform crowded Babel into a well-regulated intersection with a traffic light.

The practice of writing poetry is a process of transforming complex ideas and emotions into something more structured and controlled. In this sense, not only is it beneficial for self-care through self-expression, but it also helps develop emotional intelligence.

4. Self-reflection

Poetry is also an invaluable tool for self-reflection and understanding. In the words of Pablo Neruda, "Poetry is like a mirror that reveals the invisible, every poem is a window to the soul." Through writing and reciting poetry, one can gain insight into their subconscious and see the true essence of who they are and how they feel. This form of self-reflection can often be cathartic, especially if the poet is able to find meaningful closure and inner peace through their words.

5. Healing

Finally, poetry can offer a safe space for those who are suffering. While creating poetry, poets can be authentic and vulnerable. They can express their emotions without fear. And they can freely and creatively experiment both with emotions and with language. It can help people heal and connect with themselves and the world more profoundly and meaningfully. Poetry can also provide an avenue for individuals to share their experiences and reach out to one another. By connecting with other poets through their poetry, one can find a community and a sense of belonging.

In conclusion, poetry has been widely recognized as an effective therapeutic practice. Poetry can provide a safe space for those who are suffering and serve as a way to connect with a community. Through writing, poets can express their thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment, explore complex or charged topics, develop emotional intelligence, engage in self-reflection, and find comfort and healing. Ultimately, poetry can be an invaluable tool for mental health and emotional well-being.

Language, Labels, and Reclaiming Mental Health: Reflections on the 2017 Reclaim Mental Health Conference

In this blog post, I reflect on my experience at the 2017 Reclaim Mental Health Conference and share some thoughts on the power of personal storytelling and the importance of language in mental health advocacy

Let's Talk Crazy

Mental Health

Daria Zari

In the spring of 2017, I had the privilege of attending the Reclaim Mental Health Conference hosted by the University of California, Irvine. Over the course of two transformative days, the conference served as a sanctuary for open conversations surrounding mental health, where survivors courageously shared their personal experiences.

The atmosphere was nothing short of inspiring, as each story shared was authentic, enlightening, and deeply moving. However, amidst the powerful narratives, I couldn't help but notice a recurring theme—the speakers, although critical of the mental health industry, relied heavily on the diagnosing language of psychiatry.

In this blog post, I aim to delve into the significance of this language and explore the implications it holds for our understanding and reclaiming of mental health.

Many stories at the Reclaim Mental Health Conference were based on survivors' personal experiences. The conference, which was hosted by the University of California, Irvine, May 6-7, created an amazing, inspiring space for conversation on mental health, and each experience shared was moving, enlightening, and strikingly authentic.

Nonetheless, the speakers—most of whom were in one way or another critical of the industry—freely used the diagnosing language of psychiatry. Some started by introducing themselves with a psychiatric label: “Hi, I’m John/Jane Doe. I have ADHD/Depression/Some Personality Disorder.” Others introduced the terms later, “I still struggle with OCD/Anxiety/Trauma-related Disorder, but….”

As if to validate their experience, they had to ground them in medical terminology. They insisted on referring to the language of professionals.

Even when describing own experiences, one can find it hard to avoid the diagnostic language

Language That Creates a Distance

One of the speakers was a UC Santa Cruz student, Julia Dunn. She presented the panel “Memoir, Mental Health, and (Re)writing Your Story: How I Found Empowerment & Recovery in Creative Writing.” Julia is working on a memoir about her childhood, and in her presentation, she used the materials from her book in progress.

From the pages she read, participants learned that she grew up in the middle of the woods, in the cabins her father built so that nobody could find his wife and daughter. She talked about the rules and policies that guarded her childhood and the isolation she grew up in. Moreover, Julia talked about the student counseling center where she first tried to get help and later served at.

She revealed that many people working there were incompetent to treat students with problems other than school stress and often aggravated the situation. She talked about her activist work to bring more awareness to the issue and to ensure that counselors do simple things like asking about pronouns to use and not making assumptions about people’s experiences.

Though Julia’s presentation was personal and experience-oriented, even she felt it necessary to “medicalize” her story: she talked about OCD, depression, and anxiety in terms of symptoms and treatment. She talked about her own suffering the way a psychiatrist would talk about it as if it was witnessed from outside, as if she did not really know what it felt like.

OCD is so much more than its dry definition: excessive thoughts (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviors (compulsions). OCD is also the pain that a person suffering from it has to go through.

Who Puts Labels on Our Experiences?

In the last part of her presentation, Julia talked about finding healing in creative writing. She said that being able to tell her own story gave her a sense of empowerment and control over her life.

She said writing a little bit daily helps her save her days “so they don’t slip away unnoticed.” She talked about sharing her pain through her poetry and finding peace in knowing she is in charge of her story. However, isn’t language an important part of any story? And by still clinging to the psychiatric criteria, don’t we continue participating in the discourse that revolves around behavior control? And though it is nice to have a name for mental suffering so the system recognizes it, wouldn’t it be even nicer to have the power to name this suffering ourselves?

As the curtains drew to a close on the Reclaim Mental Health Conference of 2017, I found myself reflecting on the intricate relationship between language, personal narratives, and the power dynamics within the mental health landscape. While the conference provided a much-needed space for survivors to share their stories and find solace in their collective experiences, it also highlighted the ongoing reliance on medical terminology to validate their struggles.

The journey toward reclaiming mental health encompasses not only the healing power of personal storytelling but also the opportunity to redefine the language we use to describe and understand our own experiences.

By challenging the discourse that perpetuates behavior control and embracing the autonomy to name our own suffering, we take a significant step forward in reclaiming the narratives that define us and shaping a future where mental health is understood on our own terms.

"Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley – A Song of Resilience and Empowerment. Unlike physical illnesses, mental health challenges exist as subjective experiences and cannot be measured with objective tests (like body temperature or blood tests).

Moreover, Foucault insists that the industry of psychiatry is interested in the absolute diagnosis, in contrast to the differential diagnosis that is present in medicine. With a physical illness, when your symptoms match more than one condition, your doctor will follow up with additional tests before making a diagnosis. Tests will narrow down potential conditions on your healthcare provider’s differential diagnosis list. With mental distress, on the other hand, multiple conditions share similar symptoms, and your diagnosis will depend on your psychiatrist's interpretation of your subjective experiences.

Even though Foucault is more interested in the structure than in the personal motifs of doctors, and it would be unfair to claim that every specialist in the field acts strictly in accordance to the model proposed by Foucault, the traits of methods and approaches he describes can be recognized in practices today.

If we look at the process of diagnosing mental illness through the lens that Foucault provides us with, we can see how in their interactions with patients, psychiatrists do not try to approach every individual situation and learn more about person’s experiences. Instead, using lists of concrete symptoms provided in the diagnostic manual, they try to fit an actual human with abstract experiences in one (or more) of the made-up categories.

Practically, translating experiences into symptoms feels like trying to push something through an opening it won't fit into without some serious adjustments

The Language of Mental Illness

To fit into a mental patient frame, a person needs to translate their experiences into symptoms.

Instead of saying, for instance, “I feel sad when people I love are far away,” a patient should word their experience according to the rules of psychiatry, “I have dependency issues.”

The details and nuances of every individual situation get lost in translation, however.

The goal of evaluation is not to discover the particular circumstances of a specific person but to make sure every symptom points back at the person as a source of all of their problems.

A doctor needs to prove that a patient’s behavior is abnormal so that the doctor can classify the patient. If, as Harp says in “Schizo-Culture: On Prisons and Psychiatry” chapter, if we view the patient’s problem as “a normal reaction to abnormal conditions” (p.169), the doctor becomes irrelevant.

Therefore, the process of evaluation needs to culminate in the confession and the acceptance of the psychiatric discourse: “In short, whether in the form of confession or in the form of actualization of the central symptoms, the subject must be forced into a sort of tight corner, a point of extreme contradiction at which he is constrained to say “I am mad” and really play out his madness” (Psychiatric Power p.274).

A psychiatrist needs a patient to confess their madness. In this scene from "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", we see the psychiatrist and Randle McMurphy struggle to agree on whether Randle's subjective experiences can be framed as symptoms of a mental illness or whether they are normal.

“Give me some symptoms; I will remove the fault”

Acceptance of mental illness removes the responsibility from the patient and grants the doctor their authority.

Though a lot has changed in the industry, and, for example, involuntary commitment and the power of psychiatrists are more strictly regulated now, the approach to evaluation and treatment can still be misleading.

Doctors offer symptoms for patients’ consideration—actually planting an unequivocal way of thinking about their own experiences into their heads. The industry is still fascinated with classification and labeling, and individual experiences often get lost in the attempt to separate “normal” from “crazy.” Instead of providing a patient with means of belonging in society again, the industry promotes a feeling of inadequacy and further isolation.

Ultimately, what gets lost in translation is the significance of individual experiences and subjective realities, which cannot be classified and reduced to a list of symptoms.

Evaluating mental health requires compassion and empathy, as well as willingness to understand patients' experiences rather than expecting them to conform to the diagnostic categories.

Thus, healthcare providers should apply their knowledge of modern psychiatry while keeping in mind the dangers of its power to pathologize, dominate and erase the human experience through the instrument of diagnosis.

As always with Let's Talk Crazy blog posts, I would like to finish with a mood song. Unless you’ve studied art in school, chances are you feel overwhelmed by it and try to avoid conversations about it. Many of my friends never visit museums because they feel as if they do not understand and, therefore, do not enjoy art.

However, I insist that art is for everyone. Being both an expression and a source of inspiration, it can serve as a tool to unite people. It helps people express, experience, and work through powerful emotions and complex concepts. Visual art, dealing with images, has the potential to communicate ideas directly to our brains without the complexity of language, avoiding possible confusion and misunderstandings.

To make it easy for anyone to discuss art, I’ve created a mini-course, “Conversations about Art,” for my ESL conversation students. I’ve also decided to share some of the theory here to make it available for a slightly wider audience.

This little guide will help you navigate the world of visual art and confidently express your vision so that you can enjoy inspiring, creative conversations about art.

All works of art can be discussed in terms of these three aspects:

Form

Subject Matter

Content

Form refers to the overall structure of the piece of art. This abstract art captures the reality of war better than any realistic painting ever could. Picasso wanted to portray the Nazi casual bombing practice in Spain as frightening and repulsive as possible. By underlining the innate inhumanness of the events, he managed to create one of the most memorable anti-war symbols. The terrifying fragments of the ugly reality of war became an embodiment of peace. Meanwhile, in reality, it is still a 50/50 chance, and even if an identical twin is diagnosed with the condition, the risk is 65%, nowhere near a certainty (Healthline.com).

People believe that schizophrenia exists in the same form in every culture. Meanwhile, this study demonstrates the opposite.

People even believe that the industry of psychiatry has unfailing methods of treating people with schizophrenia. Meanwhile, in reality, multiple factors that can make the treatment challenging: from "patient-related factors (e.g., persecutory delusions, lack of insight, health care beliefs)" to "medication-related factors (e.g., lack of efficacy, distressing side effects)" (https://www.psychiatrictimes.com). Ironically, the first group of factors could be seen as a symptom of the condition itself, whereas the latter is just a comment on the quality of the treatments available.

On top of that, popular culture greedily perpetuates the image of an aggressive psycho.

"Aside from ignorance, images of the aggressive, sadistic "schizophrenic" are plentiful in the media. Such stereotypes only further the stigma and quash any shred of sympathy for individuals with this illness, writes Dr. Torrey" (Tartakovsky).

As a result, I suspect it is a common belief that people who hear voices are dangerous.

This scene from "The Shining" is an excellent example of how, in movies, hearing voices goes hand in hand with killing people.

Where You Here Your Voices Matters

As we see in Morin's article, as well as in the study "Differences in voice-hearing experiences of people with psychosis in the USA, India, and Ghana," people's experiences with voice-hearing vary not only from person to person but also culturally.

It seems that in the individualistic American society, voices are seen as unwelcome intruders, first and foremost. These American voices behave in accordance with the expectations and are often negative, aggressive, and disabling.

People in India and Ghana identify through relationships they have, so they are more prone to treat their voices as guests–as the extended family that came to visit and never left.

They develop relationships with their voices and learn to somewhat understand and utilize them.

Of course, there were exceptions in all three groups, but overall the study presents a fascinating case.

It is also important to note that aggressive voices do not necessarily mean aggressive behavior: as Irene S. So, even in America, schizophrenia does not necessarily mean danger.

What Would You Do If You Heard Voices?

I used to think of schizophrenia as if it was a death sentence–this view is common and fairly well-grounded in Western reality.

I used to believe that hearing voices would:

be shameful and troublesome;

make me hurt people I love;

erase all of the good I've ever done.

Now, especially after reading chapter two of Blackman's Hearing Voices and familiarizing myself with the disorder of consciousness approach to hallucinations, I would be more curious to start a conversation with my voices if I'm ever to hear them.

I came to realize that it is not so much the voices that disable people, as it is the way society, individuals, and specialists treat those voices that provokes conflict and leads to irreparable damage.

And I grew infinitely more compassionate toward people struggling with their voices. I am not as quick to judge or dismiss them. I feel less scared of them. And I really want to try and help, to challenge the stigma, to improve the lives of those affected. And spreading awareness is crucial if we want to reduce the stigma.

Mood of the Post Song: the now-classic Eminem and Rihanna hymn encouraging us to make peace with our monsters (and our voices). The stigma around mental unwellness does not allow people to accept their own experience as equal to that of a person with a confirmed diagnosis. On top of that, in our society, the implied hierarchy of mental unwellness pins people against each other by comparing their "crazy."

When Katerina P. writes, "being mental (with a confirmed diagnosis) is not a high status on the scale of popularity in our society," she only repeats what we all know already—stigma exists.

She views the "confirmed diagnosis" as a socially accepted way of determining the level of normality of an individual.

However, even a confirmed diagnosis is not based on objective, measurable, concrete and absolute methods.

"Symptoms do not speak for themselves," so the diagnosis is always somewhere at the intersection of the level of social conformity of a patient and the subjectivity of a psych-specialist, as we begin to see in Blackman's book.

So, even with a confirmed diagnosis, one can hope for a terrible mistake, which has jeopardized one's image of being non-crazy normal.

And I desperately wanted my friend to cling to this possibility.

Because we, Russians, were supposed to be tough and resilient, we had no right to go crazy.

Because crazy people in Russian were considered only half people (and half caged animals, perhaps), we had no right for weakness.

Because I did not want to lose my friend—and I was absolutely convinced that I would the second he admits to his experience—I wanted him to stay quiet.

What I did not realize back then was that the border between normal and crazy is ever-so-blurred.

I did not realize back then that him accepting himself in front of me was not a sign of weakness at all.

What I also did not know back then was that being normal and yourself is often at odds.

Now, I wish I was better equipped at seventeen to reply to this enormous gift of trust with more empathy and compassion. I wish I had words to communicate acceptance and love back then.

Now, more realistically, I hope I will be able to transmit acceptance through my words in this blog.

Hook and Help

All illustrations in this blog post are by Mima

My friend said there was a metal hook above his bed.

He said that he had to give his shoelaces away.

He said he could not stop thinking about the hook and the laces,

"So pointless... My friend said he had been lonely ever since.

And that's when I realized that we were more alike than different.

If you strip off labels, both of us were only human.

And just being there to validate his experience as real–and who cares how normal it was–just being a witness to his struggle was help.

So I did not talk to him about crazy.
